Local police warn that an old phone scam continues to make the rounds in the region. The Perth County OPP was contacted by a Donegal area resident who had received phone calls telling her she won $2.5 million. The complainant explained that within the past number of days she received two calls on her home phone, six phone calls were received on her husband's cell phone and two calls had been received by another relative. The caller spoke with a Jamaican accent and explained that the winnings were through a Publishing House. They said $250 would be required to process the winnings. All the winners needed to do was, send the money to an account in Kingston Jamaica via a well known money transfer company. The complainant was suspicious and believed this to be a scam. No money was forwarded and the police were contacted. Investigation revealed that the number used to make the calls is connected to previous scams. The Perth County OPP continues its investigation but the public is reminded to hang up if you are asked to pay any kind of fee for a prize or to claim lottery winnings.
