Conservative MP Stephen Woodworth's pro-life bill was soundly defeated in the House of Commons and revealed a big divide in the government caucus on the abortion issue.

The bill called on Parliament to study the definition of a human being.

Ten federal cabinet ministers voted in favour of the bill including the Minister Responsible for Status of Women Rona Ambrose.

Perth-Wellington MP Gary Schellenberger voted against the proposed legislation along with Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

The bill was defeated 203-to-91.
